This afternoon the 5th Year students entered the dungeon classroom to find that their professor was not in her usual position on the dais at the front of the class, but instead the sound of rustling and jars clinking together indicated that she was in the ingredient storeroom. This was a good sign that they would in fact be brewing a potion today rather than doing book work, so the majority of them prepared themselves by readying their cauldrons. Then, they simply waited for class to start, chattering among themselves. The Potions Master took a few more minutes before she emerged from the storeroom, her face turning a light shade of red as it seemed she was surprised by the student faces that had turned to look back at her. Clearing her throat she spoke to her class from the back of the classroom.
“Today, you will learn to brew Strengthening Solution. We will be starting immediately, as it can be an easy but time-consuming potion to brew. Once ingested, this solution fortifies the user’s strength. This is an important lesson because it is on your O.W.Ls, however it is important to note that in the wrong hands it could be a dangerous tool, thus it has earned much criticism being a part of our curriculum. You can look further into this social issue on your own time if you wish, and by including it in your essay, you may even receive extra credit.”
The Potions Master heard groans spread throughout the class as they anticipated what she would say next. “Yes, there will be an essay assignment due by next class about how to properly brew Strengthening Solution; but first, it order to write that essay, I suppose you would have to brew it first. Please pair up, and begin by gathering the necessary ingredients. By working as a duo, I’m hoping that you can have this potion completed in half the time it would normally require.” As the students flipped their textbooks to the appropriate page, Professor Brown moved aside to allow them access to the storeroom. Soon the classroom was filled with the sound of ingredients being crushed between mortar and pestle as the students got to work.
Potion brewing is a delicate art, and just like casting spells there is no room for mistake. It was important that ingredients were grinded down to the required size in preparation to go into the cauldron. As the Potions Master walked around her classroom, observing her students at work, she would occasionally stop to correct a potential mistake or advise a more efficient way of preparing an ingredient. The professor also verified that when the textbook instructed them to ’stir the Strengthening Solution forcefully’, it meant it. This potion required a firm and steady hand to stir it properly. Should a student’s touch lack determination, the potion would come out wrong and drinking it could cause an undesirable effect. Mix it like you mean it!
