General Rules
1. All members should be at least 13 years old, as stated by Proboards rules.
2. The display name for your account should be your character's first and last name, properly capitalized.
3. One character per account. You can have as many accounts as you want, but any account that doesn't post for 3 weeks risks deletion. If you create an account but do not post an application within one week, that account will be deleted. You're free to rejoin once you're ready to post.
4. There is no post length requirement. Instead of worrying about length, focus on quality. Give your partner something to work with when they respond. Fun, interesting RPs are more important than lengthy descriptions.
5. All threads are open to join, unless specified otherwise. New members should feel comfortable joining threads already in progress, and existing members should welcome additional posters at any time. In real encounters, people come and go all the time, so feel free to join 2+ page topics, join for a few posts and leave, etc.
6. Post content should not exceed the level of violence or vulgarity seen in the books. Blood and broken bones are fine, some cursing is fine, but anything more explicit or violent than that should be kept to private messages.
7. Specularis moves in real-time. This doesn't mean a Yule Ball thread is open for only one day, it just means the season in real-world Britain matches the season in Specularis, and your character doesn't age any faster or slower than you do.
8. Harry Potter books 1-7, Quidditch Through the Ages, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Tales of Beedle the Bard are canon. All the movies are canon too, including current and future Fantastic Beasts movies. Where the books and the movies majorly disagree on canon, the books take precedent. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is not canon.
9. Specularis is a welcoming, creative RP site that is simple to join and participate in. Although we intend to offer a lot than can be doe here, we understand there are a lot of other demands on members' time, and Specularis is a place to relax and collaborate to tell interesting stories rather than give you an extra responsibility to worry about. Please be friendly to everyone especially new members, patient when someone can't respond quickly, and don't feel guilty or pressured if you're out of commission for awhile.

Special Abilities and Unique Items
1. If you would like your character to have a special ability such as Animagi or Metamorphmagi, check out the Special Abilities post.
2. Your character may not have any item that can't readily be found in Diagon Alley, such as a time-turner or invisibility cloak. These items can be picked up through course of roleplay, but that's up to staff discretion.
3. Your character may not have a pet that isn't rated X or XX by the Ministry of Magic. Again, you might be able to get something more interesting through plots, but you can't start out with one.

Love and War
4. We have a staff-run profile that moderates combat between two characters, determining things like whether a spell hits its target, and what the impact was. If you would like to duel another character and you've both agreed you don't need moderation, just note in the post that you don't need moderation.
5. Pregnancies are allowed at Specularis, to progress in real time. The same staff account that moderates combat can also randomly determine the features of the baby (or babies!) if you wish. If not, you and the other parent are free to determine that yourselves.
6. You can kill your character or allow them to die if you want, and you can play them as a ghost, but they can never come back to life.
The Magicmaster
The Magicmaster is a feature that makes Specularis unique by moderating combat, introducing NPCs and controlling events. To read more about the Magicmaster, go on to the Magicmaster post.
