Erumpent Lessons

Megara looked over at Headmaster Covidire as a drizzle created a ‘pitter patter’ noise on the trees above them, but did not break through the thick leaves. The question he posed asked about the centaurs, and Meg could tell that he was awaiting her reaction. Possibly to use as basis for his own, since he did not look particularly distressed by the mention of the creatures the forest held. In all honesty, the centaurs were probably the best thing they could hope to run into. There were plenty of other creatures that could interrupt their search for the lost erumpent, not to mention other environmental hazards, as well. At least the centaurs were mostly humanoid, and could be reasoned with, although they were not known to be the most accommodating or compromising deal makers. Rather than bring this to Kamin’s attention, Meg decided on another, but still honest, response.
“The question should probably be: when we run into the centaurs. I’m sure they’re already aware of our presence and purpose here; they are very skilled in the art of divination.” Megara answered the first half of his question, but purposely avoided the second half. There was no way to know what to expect from the centaurs, she thought, as they could be unpredictable in the best of times. Despite her acquaintance with some of them, they were not exactly a friendly nor welcoming race.
As they continued, Meg’s suspicions turned into truth as she saw a second pair of tracks conjoin with the erumpent’s. They were definitely centaur tracks, which should not be surprising since they were not far from their territory. It was impossible to tell by the tracks how many of them there were, however. It was also impossible to tell how far behind the erumpent, and how far ahead of the witch and wizard, they were.
Hopefully they were merely tracking the foreign beast, not hunting it.
